Academic Credit System is a system that determines the student’s workload and effort needed in hours to complete a program or course. This course can be Bachelors, Ph.D., and MPhil. Every country has its academic credit system. So before enrolling in a new university abroad a student should be familiar with the Academic credit system of that country. He should also know the conversion of his previous credits to the credits point of the new university so that he can take admission easily. Academic credit points also tell about your progress in studies.
Most schools and colleges keep the criteria for course completion from 20 to 25 hours. The number of credits for students are assessed in the following forms:
- Attendance: Counting about how much time a student is present in class.
- Projects: The research work, assignments, and projects assigned to students during the course.
- Exams: Marks of students in oral and written term or final examinations. Also the progress in tests that are taken during the course.
- Practical Work done during studying.
Workload, contact hours, and learning outcomes are measured. The more a student works, the more credit points he gains. But a workload is suggested that every student has to reach to become average enough. For more news check out tomsdaily.news
Importance Of Academic Credit Systems
We cannot deny the importance of academic credit systems. Academic Credit Systems are important for students in the following ways:
- GPA is greatly affected by credit hours because it is measured by calculating final marks and credit hours. GPA is highly effective if you have plans to study abroad.
- Students keep a track of their progress when they put the effort into maintaining credit hours.
- Credit hours are equally important for international students. Every student should know about the conversion of credit points of their previous institute to the credit points of the new university especially if it is in another country.
The eligibility criteria for choosing academic credit systems depends on the type of the degree, course, and university. Always select the university that demands less credit score than you already gained. It ensures that you will be successful in taking admission as an international student.
Academic Credit Systems Globally
There are three most important academic credit systems worldwide:
European Credit System
European Credit System was introduced in 1989. It is now used by almost all European countries. Its full name is European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The workload for one ECTS or EC ranges from 25 to 30 hours. There are 60 EC or ECTS for one study year collectively from 1500 to 1800 hours. Learn more about credit system here https://tomsdaily.news
American Credit System and
American Credit System is based on Semester Credit Hours. According to SCH full-time study load is 30 US credits each year. Now the question arises that what is a US credit. A US credit is based on the weekly workload of a single hour in class and two hours outside the class during one semester. So we can conclude that there is 45 to 50 hours total workload in one US credit out of which a minimum of 15 hours should be contact hours.
United Kingdom Credit System
The United Kingdom uses the Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS). There should be 120 CATS per year. It is measured in CATS points that are also known as Units. There are 60 CATS points credited for one semester.
Final Verdict
Besides these three famous Academic Credit Systems, every university can have its own credit system that we call local credits. Before taking admission to any university that does not use any of these 3 credit systems students should be aware of the credit system of that university. Because some universities use different educational credit systems. Students should make sure that they contain at least average credit points equivalent to the credit points of the new university.
